Jason Momoa Reveals His One Condition for Solo Lobo Movie (Exclusive)

Jason Momoa's years-long campaign to bring DC antihero Lobo to life finally comes to fruition this month with the release of Supergirl.

The movie finds Momoa diving back into superhero fare after previously starring as Aquaman in four films for Warner Bros.

For now, the actor is amped up about making his debut as the larger-than-life, motorcycle-riding badass in the Milly Alcock-starring feature. He, however, has big ideas-and one major condition-when it comes to Lobo getting his own film further down the line.

Bring on the R-Rating

Speaking with Men's Journal at the Supergirl press day, Momoa confirmed the vibe he's going for if and when his character headlines his own movie.

"Hard R, it has to be. Sorry," he proclaimed. "Which means it may not happen. But it needs to be a hard R. I hope, one day, I'll be able to do that."

Looking at his character's possible trajectory across future DC projects, Momoa compared Lobo to both Deadpool and Aquaman.

Prior to joining James Gunn and Peter Safran's rebooted DC universe, Momoa starred as Aquaman in four previous films for Warner Bros.: Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, Aquaman, and Aquaman and the Last Kingdom.

2018's Aquaman was a smash hit, taking the fringe superhero to new heights, while also going down in history as the highest-grossing film of the now-defunct DCEU.

"I do believe it'll most likely be like how Deadpool was slowly, you learn about him. And how slowly Aquaman, [went] from Batman v. Superman, Justice League, into [his solo films]," said Momoa. "The people need to know who he is; they want to see him more. We'll see if everyone likes it and if they do, I'd like to pop into a couple different worlds."

When asked whether he's had any specific conversations with the powers-that-be about an R-rated film, Momoa said he "wouldn't do it any other way."

"I think Warners should take that jump, DC should take that jump to do it," he added. "We've already seen it can do wonders. Deadpool & Wolverine was massive. They need that."

Added Supergirl director Craig Gillespie to Men's Journal, "It has to be R-rated."

R-Rated Superhero Films

So far, there have been some pretty big successes when it comes to R-rated superhero films, including the Blade franchise, the Kick-Ass films, the first Joker movie, Hugh Jackman's solo Wolverine movie, Logan, and, of course, the Deadpool series.

2024's Deadpool & Wolverine is the top-grossing R-rated film of all time, while Deadpool 1 and 2 are also both in the Top 10. The team-up film is also the 23rd top-grossing film of all time, period, proving that an R-rating isn't a death sentence for superhero movies.

So far, Warner Bros. has released several R-rated comic book films, with Joker rising to the top of their output. Other recent releases with the adults-only rating include Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad, though neither performed anywhere near as strongly at the box office.

DC's upcoming Clayface movie, written by horror superstar Mike Flanagan, will also carry an R-rating when it drops this October.

The PG-13 Supergirl, meanwhile, hits theaters June 26.
