Janet Arvizo Jackson: Gavin Arvizo's Mom Was a 'Loose Cannon' at Trial
The new Netflix documentaryMichael Jackson: The Verdict recounts the superstar's child molestation trial and his subsequent acquittal. A major character during the trial was Jackson's accuser's mom, Janet Arvizo.
BBC called Janet Arvizo a "loose cannon" whose testimony during the trial was "explosive."
Janet later married a man named Jackson and is today named Janet Jackson. Her son, Gavin Arvizo, then 13, accused Jackson of molesting him, charges the singer adamantly denied. Today, Janet leads a private life, as does her son, although some details have trickled out about his life in recent years.
In 2004, Janet married Army Reserves Maj. Jay Jackson. Gavin's dad, David Arvizo, was accused of assaulting Janet, according to BBC, which noted that David and Janet had "an acrimonious divorce."
Why was Janet Arvizo such an important person during the trial?
Janet Arvizo Jackson Faced a 'Barrage of Criticism' During Michael Jackson's Trial
A 2005 article in The Guardian, during the trial, started, "Janet Arvizo sat in Santa Maria's modest court room facing a barrage of criticism." She alleged that she was "kidnapped along with her family and held prisoner by the singer," The Guardian reported.
Described The Guardian, "Arvizo's voice become more breathless inside the chamber as she tried to explain how she had never managed to raise the alarm, never managed to call the police or tell a friend." She told the jury, "Who could possibly believe this?"
The Guardian recounted how the defense attorney "played videos of Arvizo praising Jackson and he forced her to admit she had lied under oath in a previous compensation case."
Janet described herself as a "bad actress," leading the defense attorney to say, "I think you're a good one." According to The Guardian, she also alleged, "Neverland is all about booze, pornography and sex with boys."
She "rarely gave a straight answer to any of the defense's questions thrown at her in court, often replying using a repetitive array of words and phrases," BBC reported, quoting her as testifying at one point, "You are not going to call Halle Berry and say, 'Are you Catwoman?'"
Gavin Arvizo's Mom's Credibility Became an Issue During the Trial Testimony
During the trial, the defense attacked her testimony. Janet "admitted to lying under oath in an earlier lawsuit," according to BBC. "This is not because she's a battered woman, it's because she lies for gain," said defense lawyer Robert Sanger, per BBC.
BBC noted, "The family claims the singer held them at the ranch to get them to refute a documentary in which he admits letting children sleep in his bed." But, according to BBC: "One of the logs shows the entire family left the ranch and returned several hours later."
Janet Arvizo told the jury that she "took the family for an unnecessary trip to an orthodontist in an attempt to escape."
Janet Arvizo Was Accused of Welfare Fraud
According to The Los Angeles Times, Janet later pleaded no contest "to one count of welfare fraud in a deal that will spare her jail time." Then 38, she agreed to pay more than $8,600 in restitution to Los Angeles County "for failing to disclose when applying for welfare that she had been paid tens of thousands of dollars from a civil lawsuit."
Janet "received more than $32,000 as a settlement from a civil lawsuit against a department store where she and her children were detained on suspicion of shoplifting," jurors were told, per ABC Australia.
Family friend Louise Palanker said that Janet was upset when Gavin appeared on television with Michael Jackson, even holding his hand. "She called me within a couple of days. Janet was extremely disturbed, she was almost whispering. Janet is a very emotional person, but normally in a very ebullient, happy and charming type of way. This was fear-based agitation," she said, according to UK Standard. Gavin met Michael Jackson because he was surviving cancer and Jackson came to visit him in the hospital.
"It was an extremely disturbing phone call. She started by saying, 'If you have caller ID, this is not a safe line, do not call me back, they are listening to everything I say,'" Palanker said Janet told her, per UK Standard.
According to The Guardian, the Arvizo family received a settlement from JC Penney "after the mother accused store security guards of roughing up the family and groping her."
However, a former Michael Jackson associated named Vincent Amen alleged in the Netflix documentary that he disposed of "child abuse material" at Neverland.
