Memorial Day community events slated across San Diego County: From the USS Midway to Mt. Soledad

Memorial Day in Coronado:A Memorial Day tribute will be hosted by Coronado Veterans of Foreign Wars (Post 2422). Highlights include the presentation of colors, keynote speakers, taps and a singing of the national anthem. There is a Memorial Wall at VFW Post 2422 at 557 Orange Ave., where families can honor their veterans on bronze plaques. 10 a.m. Monday, May 25 at Star Park, 1030 Park Place.

Memorial Day at Mt. Soledad: The Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial will honor the nation’s heroes in a tribute event. This year’s event honors Cpl. Patrick Gallagher, who earned the Navy Cross during the Vietnam War for heroically shielding his fellow Marines from a live grenade. The Navy destroyer, the USS Patrick Gallagher, was named after him. Highlights will include Presentation of Colors, military band performance, remarks by military and civic leaders and Missing Man Formation flyover, 21-gun rifle volley and Taps. USS Midway: A series of events will take place as part of the USS Midway Museum’s annual Legacy Week lineup May 22-25. A Memorial Day Wreath-Laying Ceremony is at 9 a.m. Monday, May 25. Later that day, Memorial Day performances feature the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Arizona Band at 11 a.m., Desert Valley Winds Ensemble at 12:15 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. and Bonita Vista High School's Music Machine at 1:15 p.m. on the flight deck. Miramar National Cemetery: The 15th annual Memorial Day Ceremony is in the newly dedicated Memorial Amphitheater. The theme is America 250: A Tribute to Service and Sacrifice. The keynote speaker is retired Navy Captain Steven “Shep” Shepard. Music will be performed by the Westwind Brass Band. Memorial Day in Logan Heights: A Memorial Day celebration at the Logan Heights Veterans Memorial Monument will be held with taps, raising of the flag, the national anthem, prayers, reading of names of past veterans. Guest speakers include Father Mike Lee of Logan Heights Lady of Guadalupe Church and 94-year-old U.S. Army Sgt. First Class Alfred G. Gonzalez, a Korean War veteran, who continues to travel throughout California with the 82nd Airborne Association Color Guard to ensure that veterans are laid to rest with dignity. 11 a.m. Monday. Belmont Park: One hundred days of deals are up for grabs at Belmont Park. Starting Memorial Day, guests can save money on food and rides and see special live performances and win prizes. Some of the deals this summer include 50% micheladas on Mondays, $3 Tiki Typhoon rides, $5 laser tag rounds and 50% off arcades on Tuesdays and $1 popcorn on Wednesdays. Also, on July 25, carousel rides will be $2 and on Aug. 6 the Giant Dipper roller coaster will be $4 each ride. The Paper Kites:Australian band The Paper Kites is bringing indie rock sounds to San Diego. The band released its seventh album, "If You Go There, I Hope You Find It," in January. The new LP has songs that focus on love and nature, according to Apple Music. The Paper Kites were formed in 2010 and attracted a following with the single "Bloom." 7 p.m. Monday. Paws to Read:The County of San Diego's San Marcos branch is hosting an event with certified therapy dogs and children. Paws to Read is intended to inspire children to practice their reading skills by doing so out loud with a therapy dog. Each child will get 10 minutes to read to the licensed dog and then get five minutes to play with the dog. Each child is required to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. “Kim’s Convenience”: The Old Globe presents the national touring production of Ins Choi’s award-winning comedy that inspired his hit Netflix TV series. KSON Leading Ladies:The county radio station KSON is presenting a ladies of country showcase concert in Oceanside. Dancing in the Street: The public is invited to North City in San Marcos for its monthly Dancing in the Street series on Friday night. This month's event is themed hip hop fitness and includes performances from Bella Lux Entertainment, free dance lessons and opening dancing with a live DJ. The free, all-ages community gathering will also have vendors selling food and drinks. Typhoon Sinlaku Relief Concert: Harland Brewing Co. in Scripps Ranch is organizing a benefit concert for those impacted by Typhoon Sinlaku in Guam.
