When you bring a new puppy home to your adult dog, things get all out of order. It will be chaos for a while, but one of two things will happen: your older dog will retain their place in the hierarchy, or your younger dog will take over.

For one household, it seems like that choice was made for them pretty quickly. They brought home a new Cane Corso puppy, and no one was quite sure who the boss would be... Only for the Golden Retriever to become the queen of the house:

today, ariyah has met her first dog ever my older brother's 3 year old golden retriever. my puppy is 14 weeks old and still has one more vaccine left so this is a big day for her. ariyah has never met another dog or interacted with one before. safe to say she was the happiest girl! #canecorso#goldenretriever#italianmastiff#firsttime#puppy

Ariyah the Cane Corso puppy lives with her parents on her own, but they see her brother's 3-year-old Golden Retriever all the time. They'll be around each other often enough that they'll need to establish a food chain... And clearly, the Golden came out on top.

Ariyah is only 14 weeks old, so meeting other dogs is mostly off the table: she still has one round of shots left. They don't want her to be around others until she's fully vaccinated, which is the smart and safe way to go, but they know the Golden Retriever well. She's all vaccinated and good to go!

Immediately upon meeting the Golden Retriever, Ariyah exhibits clear signs of submission. She does a play bow, then she rolls over. She knows exactly where she stands, and as a result of her being so respectful, the two of them are getting along great:

This part of having dogs is my favorite. Suddenly, grown dogs who have been trained for years have no idea how to sit. They'll only do it for those delicious training treats!

Socializing Cane Corso Puppies

Cane Corso puppies are a little bit tough, especially for novice dog parents. This breed is strong-willed, stubborn, and incredibly independent at times. If you plan on raising them with or around other dogs, socialization is key.

If you have a Cane Corso puppy, you should start socializing them as soon as you can, but safety takes priority. Most puppies won't be fully vaccinated until they're about 16 weeks old: you can start then. It might be scary, like you're worrying they'll be behind, but they won't.

Alternatively, if you or someone you know has a fully vaccinated, grown dog, you can let them meet and play with each other under supervision. You might even be able to make a new friend yourself!
