Woman Reveals the Best Flower for Attracting Hummingbirds-and It's Gorgeous
It's Hummingbird season! If you're anything like me, you're racing to try anything that might bring them to your yard. I love Hummingbirds, but I've only seen a few of them in my yard. It's so sad!
Maybe I just don't have the right plants. Luckily, a woman who's had a lot of success with attracting Hummingbirds in the past recently shared her secret: the best flower to plant if you want to see some Hummingbirds. Not only is it the best, though, it's also beautiful!
@lenanagori If you want hummingbirds in your yard, plant Cuphea (cigar plant) I planted this here in Vancouver and didn't expect to see hummingbirds this often! It's one of the easiest nectar-rich flowers they LOVE #hummingbird

Lena Nagori has cracked the code! I'll definitely be taking some pointers from this video, especially since it's kind of a two birds, one stone scenario: it attracts hummingbirds, and it looks nice. The plant is Cuphea, AKA Cigar Plant. It's called that because of the brownish-red tubular flowers; they kind of look like cigars.
She keeps hers in a pot, though you could definitely plant it as well. The Hummingbirds don't seem to mind it being in a pot. All they care about is the yummy nectar inside! Someone in the comments did mention that Japanese Lady Beetles also love it, though, so if you love in an area with lots of them, try another flower instead.

Lena lives in Vancouver, and she hasn't had any issues so far! The cigar plant is easy to care for and very nectar-rich, which means it'll quickly become a neighborhood favorite for Hummingbirds, honeybees, and any other nectar lovers. Vancouver is full of beautiful flowers:

Hummingbirds love cherry blossoms, too! They're a super important food source in the early springtime, before other flowers have started to bloom.
Why Do Hummingbirds Like Cigar Plants?
Cigar plants are a great idea if you want to attract Hummingbirds, especially if you're just starting out. They need frequent watering, but other than that, they're low maintenance.
Hummingbirds are attracted to cigar plants because they're:
- Brightly colored and easy to see.
- Comfortable to "drink" from.
- High producers, meaning lots of nectar.
- Usually growing in abundance, so it's a long-term resource.
If you're going to plant them, just make sure they're not sprayed with any chemicals. You'll be the talk (or, them hum?) of the town!
