Chocolate Bars' Nationwide Recall Expanded Amid Salmonella Fears

A nationwide recall of Spring & Mulberry chocolate bars has expanded following an investigation that identified a specific ingredient as a potential source of salmonella contamination.

While the company initially recalled a limited number of products earlier this year, a detailed root-cause analysis prompted it to widen the scope to include additional products. Numerous food recalls have been initiated nationally over the past year due to potential contamination, foodborne illnesses, or undeclared allergens.

What to Know

The recall involves multiple Spring & Mulberry chocolate bar products sold nationwide through online sales and select retail partners, according to a company announcement posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday.

Spring & Mulberry said the products are being recalled due to the potential to be contaminated with salmonella, a bacterium that can cause foodborne illness.

Following a root‑cause investigation carried out with manufacturing partners, food safety experts, and the FDA, the company identified a single lot of date ingredient used in production as the most likely source of contamination. In response, the company expanded the recall to include all finished products made using that ingredient lot.

"Spring & Mulberry takes the safety and quality of its products extremely seriously," a company spokesperson said in a press release.

Company officials said all finished chocolate bars included in the expanded recall have tested negative for salmonella, and that there have been no confirmed reports of illness linked to the products to date.

The affected chocolate bars were available for purchase nationwide beginning in August 2025.

A wide range of flavors is included in the recall, including Blood Orange, Coffee, Earl Grey, Lavender Rose, Mango Chili, Mint Leaf, Mixed Berry, Mulberry Fennel, Pecan Date, Pure Dark, Pure Dark Mini, and Sea Salt.

Each product can be identified using a combination of:

• Flavor name
• Lot or batch code
• Box color

The lot code appears on the back of the packaging and the inner wrapper, according to the company.

Why Salmonella Is a Concern

Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause infections, particularly through contaminated food.

According to the company's FDA‑posted notice, infection can be serious and sometimes fatal in young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.

Healthy individuals may experience symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, while in rare cases the infection can lead to more severe illness.

What Customers Should Do

Consumers who purchased any affected chocolate bars are advised not to consume them.

To obtain a refund, customers should photograph the packaging with the batch code, email it to the company, and then dispose of the product.
