Upscale Turkish cuisine and a live jazz club come to San Ramon
Upscale Turkish cuisine with a side of live jazz has arrived in San Ramon.
Modern-Turkish restaurant Meyhouse had its soft opening Thursday, April 30 (with lunch service starting Saturday, May 2, and a grand opening Tuesday, May 5) at 6000 Bollinger Canyon Road, Suite 1505, inside City Center Bishop Ranch. It’s an East Bay expansion for the Meyhouse family, which up to now had twin restaurants in Palo Alto and Sunnyvale and an all-you-can-eat Meze & Kebab sister restaurant in Palo Alto.
The centerpiece is the restaurant itself, which has gathered a South Bay following for its elevated takes on meze plates like kopoglu (oven-roasted eggplant and peppers), Turkmen manti (dumplings with garlic yogurt and paprika butter) and fire-roasted meats and seafood.
But then there’s also Meyhouse Jazz, a separate venue attached to the restaurant that seats 40-80 people for live shows in a hyper-controlled sound environment. The venue hoped to feature Grammy-award winners and international artists, with Turkish dinner available for patrons – much like the Meyhouse Jazz associated with the Palo Alto location. (A performance schedule for both spots is posted at meyhousejazz.com.)
"The expansion marks a significant milestone for co-founders Koray Altinsoy and Omer Artun, both natives of Turkey who met in the corporate world before turning their passion for hospitality into a culinary movement," the restaurant said in a statement.
A preliminary menu that the restaurant shared includes hot-and-cold meze like ahtapot, or mesquite fire-grilled Galician octopus over gambilya fava, and girit, which is sheep's milk cheese with roasted pistachios. Then from the grill and stone-hearth oven come dishes like an alinazik kebab - marinated tenderloin with smoked-eggplant labneh - and Chilean sea bass with lemon-mashed potatoes and a Byzantine murri glaze.
Desserts include the char-topped rice pudding called sutlac, homemade baklava and kunefe, pan-seared phyllo dough with fresh mozzarella. The beverage list features California wines as well as selections from Turkey, Armenia and Morocco. Meanwhile, cocktails draw from regional ingredients like pomegranate, Aleppo pepper and sage tea.
The national drink of Turkey, raki, which is an anise-flavored liquor you either love or hate, is served by the shot, double shot or bottle for the brave. And the restaurant says that guests can also "enjoy high-end whiskey flights highlighting producers from Japan to America."
