April 30 A-E Source: Solano Winds set to present 'Global Harmony' concert
Solano Winds Community Concert Band will perform its May concert, "Global Harmony," on Friday at the Fairfield Downtown Theatre.
"There are obvious things in the world right now that are going on that are troublesome and violent," said Music Director and Conductor Roger Wu Fu. "We're all living in the same world. I hope that this is an opportunity to show that we can be in harmony together and enjoy what it is to be on this planet."
When choosing the program title, Wu Fu wanted it to reflect the opposite of "American Mosaic," the ensemble's previous March program.
The previous program celebrated the diversity of American music, spanning Appalachian traditions to the nation's history, including pieces that incorporated the second and fourth verses of "The Star-Spangled Banner."
This time, his goal for "Global Harmony" was to broaden the scope and showcase music types and culture from around the world.
"The music itself has been so fun to go through," said Wu Fu.
He began to select pieces for "Global Harmony" between last summer and early fall as he was organizing programs for the season.
"It's kind of hard because you don't know at the moment who's going to be in the group, who is going to be available throughout the time of year, or how the rest of the year is going to go," said Wu Fu. "But, for this (program) I've shot for the stars, and I think we've done a great job. I'm happy and proud of where we're at."
Program selections range from "Roma," which reflects Romani culture and traditions, to "Danzón No. 2," a piece that blends Mexican and Cuban musical influences.
The concert will feature music from Mexican composer Arturo Márquez, Chinese composer Chen Yi, English composer and musician Philip Sparke, American composer and flautist Valerie Coleman, and Australian composer Percy Grainger.
"Each composer really stretches and uses the specifics of concert band instrumentation to achieve the vastness and variety of each piece," said Wu Fu.
Wu Fu said the musicians within the orchestra are also a "connecting thread" to celebrating diversity.
"In a broader sense, every individual is from a different group, a different place, and nonetheless, we're all doing the same thing," he said.
Wu Fu hopes the community will continue to attend and support the arts, whether at Solano Wind events or around Solano County.
"This really feels like the culmination of our work in the sense that (the musicians) have gotten so much better and we've all gotten closer each time," said Wu Fu. "This is a good opportunity for people, not just to support us, but to have an evening to not worry about anything and enjoy great music."
"Global Harmony" will take place at the Fairfield Downtown Theatre, 1035 Texas St., at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
