Berkeley's finally getting one of these cult-favorite burger joints

The cult favorite Shake Shack has opened 17 locations in the Bay Area, starting with one at Stanford Shopping Center back in late 2018.

Today, April 28, Berkeley becomes the Bay Area’s 18th.

The doors at 1950 Oxford St. will open at 10 a.m., after a 9:30 ribbon-cutting. On this first day of service, Shake Shack will donate $1 from every burger and chicken sandwich sold to the nonprofit Berkeley Food Network.

The fast-casual restaurant was founded as a hot-dog cart in New York City’s Madison Square Park but quickly became known for its all-natural Angus beef burgers. However, there's still an all-natural Vienna beef "flat-top dog" on the menu - along with cage-free chicken sandwiches, crinkle-cut French fries and hand-spun milkshakes.

The opening coincides with the introduction of the restaurant group’s newest seasonal specials: sandwiches topped with pimento cheese, the piquant Southern spread rarely seen in this part of the country. Shake Shack's version is made with aged cheddar and peppers, and it will be available for a limited time.

Two other Shake Shacks opened this month: a Sunnyvale eatery in the Cityline district on April 1 and one in Mountain View at San Antonio Center on April 9.

Details: The first 100 customers in line today at 1950 Oxford St. will receive a limited-edition tote bag. The hours for this Shake Shack have not yet been posted, but most locations are open from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 10 a.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays. https://shakeshack.com/#/
