Gardening in a small space comes with its own set of challenges. Maybe you're working with a narrow balcony, a tiny front porch or just a sliver of outdoor real estate that barely fits a chair, let alone a full garden setup. You still want the greenery, herbs and maybe even a few flowers, but figuring out where everything goes can feel like a puzzle.

That's where a little creativity really comes in. Vertical container gardens are a go-to for a reason, helping you make the most of limited square footage by building upward instead of outward. But don't stop there. Look around, and you'll start to notice other underused spots. Railings, for example, are often overlooked, but they're prime real estate for adding plants without taking up any floor space.

With the right setup, even the smallest outdoor area can feel lush and intentional rather than cramped. It's all about finding smart, space-saving solutions that work with what you have-not against it. And sometimes, the best ideas are the ones hiding in plain sight, like Aldi's Belavi Trough with attached hooks that can fit over a railing.

The same size Belavi Trough can also be found at Aldi in a pastel green and a buttery yellow, with that corrugated texture around the exterior.

When it comes to a hanging trough planter, think about working with plants that won't mind a little crowding and can handle quick-drying soil. For an easy win, try herbs like basil, thyme, parsley and mint (just know the last one likes to take over).

For flowers, go for trailing varieties like petunias or ivy geraniums to get a soft, cascading look. If you want something more functional, leafy greens like lettuce or arugula actually do really well in shallow containers. The key is mixing textures and sticking with plants that have similar sun and water needs so everything thrives together.

Aldi has a ton of gardening goodness in stores right now. There's a mini drop over greenhouse for just $7.99, and a raised planter designed for kids to use. In terms of patio decor, Aldi has a $15 terrazzo table as well as a stunning outdoor rug that's giving major Mediterranean vibes. So maybe clear out the trunk of your car before you head on your next shopping trip because you could need the space for all of these new finds.
