Hearts Break Over Face of Dog Patiently Waiting 2,400 Days in Shelter

For over 2,400 days, a senior dog has been waiting for the right home at an animal rescue in the United Kingdom after his previous owner surrendered him due to allergies.

The 8-year-old beagle, Jake, first arrived at the New Romney center in August 2019 after his family made the difficult decision to surrender him because the children in the home were allergic, Carrie Thatcher, a staff member at Last Chance Animal Rescue in Edenbridge, told Newsweek via email. Jake was later moved to the Edenbridge center, where he would begin a long-term stay that no one could have predicted.

“Jake came to us as a typical beagle,” Thatcher said, “a happy food-oriented boy, but in good condition, with a love for cuddles, toys and playing.”

However, the past 6.5 years for Jake turned into a complicated journey, marked by resilience, setbacks, and a dog who has never lost his gentle spirit. The team is still hopeful Jake’s perfect adopter is out there, as it continues to share his story on social media.

Dog Returned Twice

Thatcher said Jake had two failed adoption attempts-both of which ended in distressing circumstances. His first adoptive home initially appeared ideal, but an anonymous member reported concerns, leading to a Ring camera discovery of the adopter using physical force against Jake in an attempt to make him go upstairs.

“We wasted no time in going to collect him from this home,” Thatcher said, “in which we received a text message of him admitting fault and making excuses as to why Jake ‘deserved it.'”

The dog returned frightened and emotionally shaken, having developed clear signs of trauma. Jake flinched at sudden movements, struggled with trust, and had gained a significant amount of weight during his time away.

His second adoption began more cautiously. The new adopter visited Jake multiple times to build trust before taking him home. Although Jake did show fear-based reactions at times, including snapping when scared, the adopter remained committed to helping him adjust and welcomed Jake home.

Sadly, just a month later, tragedy struck. The adopter suffered a heart attack and was unable to continue caring for Jake. With no alternative arrangement, the dog returned once again to the shelter, where he has remained ever since.

Developing Medical Challenges

Jake’s yearslong stay is not only due to the dog’s behavior, but also his ongoing medical needs, which have both impacted his trust issues.

Jake was diagnosed with diabetes and is gradually losing his sight. He requires insulin injections twice a day, but the staff noticed he always waits patiently, knowing a carrot is coming for being a good boy.

“Taking on a dog with severe trust and behavioral issues, as well as a medical condition, is a huge ask,” Thatcher said. “The right home is out there for Jake, and, once he has found it, he will finally get the love he deserves.”

Staff members say that it is not a lack of lovable qualities Jack has, but rather the level of care he needs.

Adoption Hope

Despite everything, Jake has remained a cheerful presence among staff and volunteers.

A March 9 TikTok video under the account @lastchanceanimalrescue shared that, once Jake trusts you, he will be affectionate and loves to cuddle. As a food-obsessed boy, he’ll eagerly work for low-fat doggy treats, and, like a typical beagle, he loves the sound of his own voice, Thatcher said.

“He loves his walks, and he has to sniff seemingly every blade of grass,” she added. “A 10-minute walk will take Jake 45 minutes, as he loves all the smells, and, due to him losing his vision, we take our time with him.”

With over 25,000 views on TikTok, users flooded the comment section with prayers and hope that Jake finds his forever home.

“It’s time this lovely dog landed on someone’s sofa & was part of a loving family. You will need patience, but you’ll have a very deserving pet,” wrote a viewer.

Another added: “Wishing you the best of luck in finding your special person, Jake. You deserve the world for the rest of your life.”
