The Spanspek Music and Arts Festival is a barometer of the central San Joaquin Valley’s music scene.
For 11 years, its organizers have curated an event that spotlights the area’s hardest-working up-and-comers across genres. The past performers list includes Strange Vine, Slow Season, Light Thieves, Lance Canales and the Flood, Patrick Contreras, the Argyle Pimps, Fatty Cakes & the Puff Pastries and Mezcal.
For a local music nerd like myself, trying to figure out who might be on this year’s lineup makes for a fun guessing game.
The festival, which takes place Saturday, Sept. 17 in Orosi, just released its official lineup. It includes the Sabbath-bred doom metal band Beastmaker, Friendcore standouts Dirty Limbs and Sci-Fi Caper, the synthpop duo Personal Computer, the alternative hip-hop group Sagey, Visalia indie-rock band Call Me James and the Orosi mariachi collective Mariachi Sol do Oro. In between performances will be DJ sets from Sahab, K. Pizzle and Jalinche.
Never miss a local story.
Beastmaker, which will headline the night, released its debut album “Lusus Naturae” on Rise Above Records in March. The trio is currently in the midst of a U.S. tour with Mondodrag and Sweat Lodge.
Spanspek provides annual scholarship grants for Orosi High School seniors majoring in an artistic discipline and commissions work from local artists to be displayed each year. The festival is a project of The Arts Consortium in Tulare County.
