David White's Three-Point Stance: Sign of things to come for Bulldogs basketball?

1. Once upon a Steve Cleveland Era, the Fresno State men's basketball team became something far worse than a below-average program: The Bulldogs became irrelevant and Fresno simply stopped caring, one way or the other. No frenzied joy when they won. No fanatical anger when they lost. Fans hated Ron Adams and Gary Colson back in the day, but at least they were bothered enough to scream. Maybe, just maybe, Friday's season-opening overtime victory at UC-Irvine is the start of something more than a collective yawn. Now, if they can steal a win or two at Pitt, Cal or Florida …

2. I'll never forget being at the first practice after former Raiders coach Tom Cable "allegedly" broke the jaw of an assistant during training camp in 2009. When Cable walked onto the field, players chanted "Cable, bomaye" — translated as "Cable, kill him," a play on the pro-Mohammed Ali chant during the Rumble in the Jungle. What was a fireable offense in most workplaces actually bought Cable street cred in the NFL locker room. Remember that when you feign shock at the bullying Richie Incognito is accused of doing in Miami.

3. Never been a conspiracy guy, but just watch — the Lakers will finish two spots out of the playoffs, have among the fewest ping-pong balls in the NBA lottery field, and yet magically come up with the No. 1 overall pick in next year's draft. Because, of course they will. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got a grassy knoll to go landscape.
