Starting Friday and until Jan. 4, free winter shuttles will run about every 10 minutes from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks.
The stops are: Wuksachi Lodge, Wolverton Snowplay area, the Main Sherman Tree Trail parking area, Sherman Tree shuttle stop and the Giant Forest Museum.
All buses accommodate wheelchairs and bicycles with restrooms available at all stops. Routes may change in snowy conditions.
• A number of free ranger-led programs are offered to the public through the winter. At Grant Grove, snowshoe walks are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday through Monday. A snowshoe walk at Giant Forest will be held 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. A limited number of snowshoes are provided. Space is limited. Hike to Smith Basin at McKenzie Preserve
The Sierra Foothill Conservancy is hosting an 8-mile round-trip hike to Smith Basin on Jan. 3. It is recommended for advanced hikers only as it has a 1,000-foot elevation gain to the tabletop and then descends 800 feet into the basin.
There are a limited number of spots available. The hike takes about seven hours to complete, allowing for lunch in Smith Basin.
The group will meet at 9 a.m. in the parking area. Participants should bring water, snacks or a lunch.
REI Garage Sale

REI will hold a members-only garage sale for adventurers seeking cheap and discounted gear. The store will hand out numbered wristbands at 2 p.m., with the lottery draw entry starting at 3 p.m. Memberships can be purchased on site for $20. All sales are final.
