Wednesday recap – It was a rough Triple-A debut for Fresno starter Edison Frias, who gave up three home runs in a 6-3 loss to the Las Vegas 51s in front of an announced crowd of 4,825 at Chukchansi Park. Marc Krauss started the barrage with a three-run shot in the top of the third, and teammates Roger Bernadina and Travis Taijeron added solo shots in the fourth and sixth. Frias (0-1, 9.00) allowed seven hits, six runs (all earned), walked one and struck out four in six innings. Fresno’s A.J. Reed hit a towering, 420-foot solo homer in the bottom of the third, and Jon Kemmer added a one-out, two-run homer in the ninth.
Tuesday recap – Grizzlies starter Cesar Valdez (9-1) allowed just two hits in seven scoreless innings to win his third straight start as Fresno edged the Las Vegas 51s 1-0 at Chukchansi Park. The Grizzlies scored the game’s only run on Tyler White’s RBI single in the fifth inning. Jordan Jankowski and James Hoyt each pitched an inning to finish the Grizzlies’ 11th shutout of the season, with Hoyt closing for his PCL-leading 27th save to inch closer to the franchise season record of 31 set by Heath Hembree in 2013.
Up next – The Grizzlies and 51s will play a doubleheader starting at 5:05 p.m. Thursday. Fresno RH Mike Hauschild (7-8, 2.89) is scheduled to face Las Vegas RH Gabriel Ynoa (9-4, 4.32) in the first seven-inning game with Grizzlies RH Brad Peacock (4-5, 4.39) facing 51s LH Duane Below (5-8, 4.99) in the second. The teams also are set to play a doubleheader Aug. 4 at Cashman Field as they make up two rained-out games in Las Vegas on April 9-10.
Break it down – Entering Wednesday, the Grizzlies are 19-13 in one-run games, 47-4 when leading after seven innings, 45-0 when leading after eight and 49-15 when scoring first. They are 30-11 since June 11, when they were a season-worst 10 games under .500.
