Saturday recap –Tommy Shirley took a five-hit shutout into the seventh and No. 9 hitter Max Stassi homered and hit a two-run double while snapping an 0-for-21 skid as visiting Fresno beat Salt Lake 7-1 at Smith's Ballpark. The Grizzlies have won the first three games of the series, four straight overall and 16 of their past 20.
Up next – Fresno RH Brad Peacock (2-3, 4.65 ERA) faces Salt Lake LH David Huff (0-2, 7.23) to wrap up the four-game set at 12:05 p.m. Sunday. Peacock hit reverse in his most recent outing after an encouraging three-start run, needing 88 pitches to labor through three innings (allowing two runs on six hits) against Tacoma last Monday. Before that, he had shown signs of turning his season around, allowing two earned runs in 18.2 innings against Salt Lake, Sacramento and Albuquerque.
Fitting in – Grizzlies RH Brendan McCurry retired all four hitters he faced in Friday’s 4-1 victory and ran his scoreless streak to nine innings since his promotion from Double-A Corpus Christi. He has struck out eight without a walk.
Coming home – Monday brings the season’s first home games of the Highway 99 rivalry series against Sacramento, as well as what’s billed as the largest fireworks spectacular in the Central Valley after the game. The Grizzlies will offer rides on the “Growlifornia Monsoon” waterslide, with no age limit. First pitch is 6:05 p.m., with a hot dog eating contest during the game. Fresno swept four games June 13-16 in Sacramento.
