Saturday recap: Newly arrived top prospect Mark Appel surrendered seven runs in three innings in the opener and the Grizzlies managed little in the way of offense in either game, losing to Reno 8-0 and 2-1 in a doubleheader of seven-inning games. Appel worked around a two-out error in a scoreless first, then in the second was touched for a three-run homer by Cody Ransom in an eventual four-run inning. Ex-Fresno State star Garrett Weber was aboard via a single ahead of Ransom’s blast and tripled home two runs in the third to help speed Appel’s early exit. Weber is hitting .302 in 202 at-bats this season. Fresno RH Dan Straily (6-6) pitched a six-inning complete game in the nightcap, but the Grizzlies got nothing more on the day beyond Alex Presley’s solo homer in the first inning. They were 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position in the two games.
Grizzlies on Sunday: RH Asher Wojciechowski (5-0, 3.54 ERA), undefeated but with one win in his past four starts, takes the mound against Reno RH Aaron Blair (1-1, 7.59) as the teams play game 4 of a five-game wraparound series. Wojciechowski was knocked around for seven runs (six earned) in 5.1 innings of a June 6 start against the Aces at Chukchansi Park, though the Grizzlies offense banged out an 11-7 victory. Blair has made two Triple-A starts after going 6-3 with a 2.70 ERA at Double-A Mobile. A first-round pick (No. 36 overall) by Arizona in the 2013 draft, Blair was 4-2 with a 4.38 ERA in 13 starts for Class-A Visalia a year ago — one of his three minor league stops in 2014. He was rated the Diamondbacks’ No. 3 prospect by Baseball America and MLB.com entering this season.
Stat of the day: 20-20 — career minor league record for Grizzlies RH Tyson Perez (Hanford High/Fresno City) after he picked up his first Triple-A victory in Friday’s come-from-behind 4-1 win over Reno. He has 46 career starts, though none since 2013. In 23 games for the Grizzlies, he has allowed just 16 hits and four walks while striking out 20 in 28.1 innings.
