Grizzlies left-hander Tommy Shirley will make his first start of the season in place of season-opening starter Brad Peacock, who was promoted by the Houston Astros. Shirley has made one relief appearance this year, striking out two in a scoreless inning. The 6-foot-5 Shirley spent most of last season at Double-A Corpus Christi, where he went 7-3 with a 1.88 ERA and 78 strikeouts in 861/3 innings. He then moved to Triple-A Oklahoma City and finished 0-2 with a 4.35 ERA in 13 games. Shirley will face Los Angeles Angels pitcher Garrett Richards, who is starting the season in the minors while recovering from offseason knee surgery. Richards went 13-4 with a 2.61 ERA and 164 strikeouts last year.

It looked real bad for the Grizzlies early after starting pitcher Brady Rodgers gave up six runs and seven hits in the first inning. The Grizzlies got Rodgers off the hook for the loss after scoring eight runs in the third and beat the Salt Lake Bees 9-8 on Monday.
