Kingsburg High stayed on campus and named Dave Wilson as its football coach on Wednesday, school athletic director Doug Davis said.
Wilson is a Kingsburg graduate, former football player and current English teacher on campus.
He’s been out of coaching for four years after coaching the junior varsity under his predecessor, Dave Steele, for three seasons. And Wilson also assisted Mike Newell before that.
Wilson, a former College of the Sequoias and Azusa Pacific player, also coached previously at Riverdale.
Steele was fired by the district’s Board of Trustees two weeks ago in a move that was as sudden as it was controversial.
Steele, 73-16 (.820) with three Central Section titles in seven years, said the firing was precipitated by his refusal to accept four new assistants hand-picked by the school board.
He said that was an unprecedented move by the board in a career so successful the former Division IV program had been elevated by the section to D-II while competing against many schools twice the Vikings’ enrollment in playoffs.
