It was a night that the Buchanan football program will remember as the No. 11-seeded Bears took down No. 6 Bullard 35-29 Friday.
The Bears came in 2-8 but clicked in every phase en route to the program’s first playoff victory since 2008.
“We were well prepared and all we did was believe,” said senior wide receiver Zach Ashford, who repeatedly got behind the Bullard secondary and caught touchdowns of 69 and 39 yards.
Junior running back Chuby Dunu also found the end zone twice for Buchanan. “I just ran hard and protected the ball,” he said.
A 25-yard touchdown run by the Knights’ Charles Williams and subsequent 2-point conversion cut Bears’ lead to to eight with 6:33 left. John Brown was also key component for Bullard, hauling in a touchdown catch as well as returning a kickoff 99 yards for a score.
Buchanan next plays at No. 3 Bakersfield.
