From the moment they ran onto the field, Clovis West High and Buchanan made it clear just how excited they were about a matchup of Central Section top-three teams.
Buchanan came out firing first in Friday night’s Week 8 showdown behind two touchdowns from star running back Kendall Milton to lead by 11 at halftime.
But it was Clovis West that answered the call after the break.
Dante Chachere threw two touchdowns and the Golden Eagles stifled the Bears’ vaunted rushing attack in the second half as Clovis West – ranked No. 2 in The Bee’s Central Section Top 10 coaches poll – won 36-17 in a Tri-River Athletic Conference game at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
33-3 How much Clovis West outscored Buchanan in the second half
Clovis West outscored the No. 3 Bears 33-3 in the second half.
The Eagles were so tough down the stretch that their defense alone scored three times as many points as the Buchanan offense in the final two quarters.
Clovis West picked up two points on a safety early in the fourth, and Jaylon Parrish returned an interception for a 60-yard touchdown to provide the finishing touches.
The Eagles (6-1, 2-0) have won six straight since losing their opener to Liberty-Bakersfield by a point.
Clovis West hosts Clovis East next week, then takes on top-ranked Central on Oct. 26 in a game that likely will decide the TRAC championship.
Buchanan (5-2, 0-2), coming off a close loss to Central, has dropped two straight after a 5-0 start.
Milton scored twice from in close in the first half Friday, including on fourth-and-1 for the game’s first score.
Rodney Wright turned a short pass from Chachere into a 53-yard touchdown for the Eagles’ first lead of the night at 17-14.
Buchanan kicked a field goal to tie it, but Clovis West responded with 19 unanswered points, including a 27-yard touchdown pass to Ricardo Arias from Chachere.
