Central Section basketball finals: Clovis West girls rout Edison for fourth straight D-I title

All season they were on a collision course for a championship rematch, never meeting during the regular season but always on each other’s minds.

Edison and Clovis West high schools – the two best girls basketball teams in the Central Section and among the best in the state.

And yet the talent level, execution rate and tenacity gap never seemed as wide as it was Saturday night.

Clovis West steamrolled Edison from the start, rarely letting up in a 69-38 victory in the Division I final at Selland Arena as the Golden Eagles captured their fourth consecutive section crown.

“These girls are amazing,” Clovis West coach Craig Campbell said. “They continue to work hard. They never take games for granted.

“Each championship is special. Each had its own special journey. They all feel great. It’s been a run.”

The Eagles (29-3) jumped to a 14-0 lead and held Edison (27-4) scoreless in the opening quarter until the Tigers made a basket with 39 seconds left.

“That’s a machine,” Edison coach Bill Engel said. “They’re very well-oiled, and the more they go, the stronger they go.

“They’re animals. They all do their responsibilities and they do the same thing over and over, and do it right. They’re a great team.”

Unfortunately for the Tigers, the Eagles’ onslaught was just beginning with Clovis West’s sharpshooters also heating up.

Clovis West converted seven of its first 11 three-point attempts and finished 10 of 17 from long range.

Junior Sarah Bates, who was 3 of 5 on three-pointers, scored a game-high 17 to go with four assists and three rebounds.

Four other Eagles scored in double figures: Madison Campbell with 13, Megan Anderson and Danae Marquez with 12 each and Bre’yanna Sanders with 11.

The offensive prowess proved to be the difference compared to a year ago when Clovis West trailed at halftime before rallying for a 48-36 victory.

“We felt like we were a better team than we were a year ago,” Campbell said. “We were really tight, started four sophomores last year. We expected to perform better.

“We didn’t expect it to be what it was tonight. But we did expect to perform better.”

Edison’s Rodjanae Wade, a 6-foot-3 center, finished with five points and eight rebounds as Clovis West sped up the tempo and made it difficult for the Tigers to make entry passes into the post.

Malaya Kendrick led the Tigers with 12 points.

“We really wanted to hang our hat on defensive rebounding,” Campbell said. “So we went out and got stops, closed the lane on them. We knew our offense would kick in better than it did a year ago.

“We have a lot of principles and a lot of demands in our defense. It’s not just reckless basketball. We really try to speed people up. We felt like we did that tonight.”

Both teams move on to Southern California Regional play, with Clovis West expected to draw a spot in the Open Division bracket. Seedings will be announced Sunday.
