And, sure enough, Adrian Antunez calmly worked 8 seconds off the clock, drove from far atop the key, released a floater, then received a friendly bounce off the rim and in with 0.5 seconds left as Central Section No. 1 Clovis West escaped 63-61 in a Tri-River Athletic Conference boys basketball opener at No. 9 Clovis North.
“I was hot so they gave me the ball and I did what I was supposed to do,” said Antunez, who scored on four such floaters in the fourth while finishing with 17 points.
Michael Orlich, a three-year starting point guard who inbounded the ball to Antunez, made five 3-pointers in a 19-point night for Clovis West (12-4), which trailed 44-27 early in the third quarter. Sophomore Jahvon Johnson scored 23 points for Clovis North (8-9), whose coach, Tony Amundsen, was denied his 200th win in an 11-year career that began at Central and Bullard.
