Central Section baseball rankings: Buchanan remains No. 1, but challengers abound

Buchanan High’s baseball team remains top ranked by The Bee in the Central Section — and state-ranked as well by Cal-Hi Sports — emerging from Easter week tournaments and leading into the final five weeks of the regular season.

The 15-3 Bears, four-time section Division D-I champions in the past 10 years, are also ranked No. 14 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports. They lead Nos. 2-5 Centennial of the Southwest Yosemite League, Tulare Western of the East Yosemite and Clovis North and Clovis of the Tri-River Athletic Conference among The Bee’s top five.

Centennial and, especially, Tulare Western, are facing the teeth of section history.

An SWYL team hasn’t won the section Division I baseball title since Stockdale in 2009. And an EYL team hasn’t won among the big boys since Monache defeated Bullard 5-4 under coach Paul Begin in 1991.

Coach James Patrick, who has won seven D-I championships at Clovis in 28 years, including one last season, says: “We’ve got to learn how to score to become a legitimate contender.”
