Prep highlights for March 31: Selma, Washington win softball tournaments

Tuesday’s softball highlights


 Tournament Most Outstanding Pitcher Anisah Navarro fired a five-hitter and helped her cause with a first-inning RBI single that led Selma over The Bee’s Central Section No. 15-ranked Sanger 2-0 for the Kerman Easter Classic title. MVP Alisha Marshall also had a run-scoring single in the first for the Bears, who are ranked No. 1 in Division IV. Marshall finished 3 for 4. Jackie Plaza and Aly Cerda were named all-tournament for the Bears, who are now 16-0.


 Freshman pinch-hitter Jacq Torres led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a single, freshman Sarah Clay sacrificed pinch-runner Mandy Ornelas to second and Katie Reisdorfer hit a two-out RBI double to send Washington past Fowler 5-4 in the championship game of the Fowler Easter Classic. Tournament MVP Mikayla Deigan stranded the tying run at third in the top of the seventh, capping off a 6-0 tournament with 40 strikeouts in 29 innings. Washington won its 12th straight Fowler tournament game.

hit a three-run homer as Bullard defeated Del Norte-San Diego 9-1.

Ryan Machado

sparked a three-run eighth with a sacrifice fly that pushed in the go-ahead run as Memorial defeated Chowchilla 7-4 in extra innings. Machado finished with three RBIs.

Alec Gamboa’s

two-hit shutout, Madera defeated Clovis East 1-0.

Nick Zamora

drove in the only run.


Chandler Bengsten

batted 2 for 3 and drove in four runs as Buchanan pounded Bella Vista 16-4.

each drove in two runs as Kerman took care of North 11-1 in six innings.

• Edison scored twice in the eighth inning at home, received three RBIs from

and a triple, double and two RBIs from

to defeat Foothill-Pleasanton 9-7.


• Clovis West handed Oak Ridge its first loss of the season, winning 5-4 behind

Austin Johnson’s

complete game. Oak Ridge (10-1) was ranked 11th in the state by CalHiSports.

batted 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Golden Eagles. Clovis West (11-6) also blanked Stockdale 1-0 as

struck out seven in a complete game.

Jon Schafer

drove in the lone run. The Eagles advance to the semifinals today against Elk Grove.


Four teams are in the running for the Selma Greater Kiwanis championship, which will be played at 6 p.m. today at Selma High.

Those teams are Selma and Sequoia-Redwood City, who are each 2-0, and Sierra and Chavez, who are each 2-0-1. Selma and Sequoia will resume a suspended game at 9 a.m. today.
