Sunnyside High senior Melvin Alas scored with a minute left in sudden death to give No. 8 Sunnyside a 2-1 victory over No. 2 Clovis North in a Central Section Division I boys soccer final on Saturday, giving the Wildcats their second section title.

“The message was clear to the guys that a lot of people doubted us,” Sunnyside coach Fabian Rangel said. “They knew that the seeding we received wasn’t relevant to the hard work and dedication the boys had put in day in and day out.”

The Wildcats knocked off top-seeded Clovis 2-1 in last week’s quarterfinals, then beat No. 5 Bullard on penalty kicks, 5-4, after the teams were tied 1-0 through regulation and overtime in Tuesday’s semifinal.

The Division I final was a rematch of the D-II final when both team’s met in 2012 and the Broncos won in a penalty shootout. This time, the Wildcats came out on top despite giving up a late goal in the 78th minute.
