Prep softball rankings: Central remains No. 1; Clovis West jumps to No. 5

Central High remains No. 1 in The Bee’s Central Section softball rankings, but its hold on the top spot is anything but secure followed a 4-2 upset loss against unranked Clovis North last week.

The Grizzlies didn’t drop because the teams right below them – Clovis and Buchanan – each lost twice last week.

Gaining the most ground this week is Clovis West, which shares the Tri-River Athletic Conference lead with Central at 3-1 following wins over Buchanan and Clovis East last week. The Golden Eagles, who moved from No. 8 to No. 5 in this week’s rankings, have a big game Tuesday at Clovis.

The showdown of the week comes Friday when Central hosts Buchanan at 3:45 p.m.

The section’s only undefeated team, Selma, can almost wrap up the Central Sequoia League title with a sweep of Dinuba this week. The Bears face the Emperors at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Dinuba and at 4:30 p.m. Friday in Selma.
