The Bee's Winter All-Stars: Outstanding Offensive and Defensive boys soccer performers, Coach of the Year and team

Outstanding Offensive Performer

CHRIS AMARO

•

School:

Dinuba

•

Grade:

Senior

•

Position:

Forward

•

He’s qualified because:

Provided the offensive spank for the Central Section Division III champion Emperors with a school single-season record 46 goals (which led the section and ranked tied for sixth nationally among statistics kept on

maxpreps.com

) to go along with 13 assists. Amaro’s 105 points tied for fourth in the nation. He helped Dinuba go 21-5-3 overall, win the Central Sequoia League while earning league MVP honors, and reach the CIF Southern California Regionals, where he scored his final two goals of the season in the Emperors’ 5-2 loss to Canoga Park. The San Jose State-bound Amaro recorded eight hat tricks, including one against Tulare in Dinuba’s 4-1 win for the section title. He finished with 59 goals and 20 assists in two varsity seasons.

Outstanding Defensive Performer

PETER LARSEN

•

School:

Bullard

•

Grade:

Senior

•

Position:

Goalkeeper

•

He’s qualified because:

At 6-foot-4 and 185 pounds, Larsen provided an imposing presence in the cage for a Knights team that went 15-4-5 overall, won the County/Metro Athletic Conference title and reached the quarterfinals of the Central Section Division I playoffs. Larsen made 67 saves for a team that posted nine shutouts on the season. He excelled at stopping penalty kicks during his three seasons as a starter that saw Bullard do a collective 43-23-11 with two CMAC titles. Knights assistant coach Cameron Hill said Larsen had options to play in college, including interest from UC Davis, but the likely school valedictorian with more than a 4.0 grade-point average is headed to UCLA to focus on academics.

Coach of the Year

JOHN SPURGEON

•

School:

Buchanan

•

He’s qualified because:

Directed the Bears to their fourth Central Section championship of his eight-year tenure – and the fifth title of his 15-year coaching career – with a 1-0 overtime victory against Liberty-Bakersfield in the Division I final. Buchanan’s 21-3-1 season was higlighted by a championship run through the Lotto Western Showcase, which prompted

topdrawersoccer.com

to rank the Bears as high as No. 3 nationally and No. 1 in the state after wins over highly regarded Loyola-Los Angeles, Servite-Anaheim and Brophy Prep-Arizona. TRAC champion Buchanan finished ranked 19th nationally and fifth in California after reaching the CIF Southern California Regional semifinals, losing 1-0 to eventual D-I champion Chula Vista.
