Co-Outstanding Boys Track Event Performers

Emmett Brooks, Kingsburg

  • Grade: Junior
  • Events: Long jump/high jump
  • On the podium: He’s the breakout Central Section performer in track and field, if not every sport — boys and girls — for the section in the entire school year. Consider that he entered his junior season with a personal best of 6 feet, 3 inches in the high jump and hadn’t long jumped at all. Fast forward — he finished the season with a section season second-best 6-8 high jump and sailed 24-1 in the long jump for second place at the CIF State Championships. And Brooks seemingly had the state gold in hand before Rio Mesa’s Gregory Vann launched a 24-6 on his final jump at Buchanan’s Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Joey Souza, Kingsburg

  • Grade: Senior
  • Event: Long jump
  • On the podium: He departs for North Carolina of the Atlantic Coast Conference as one of the most prolific long jumpers in Central Section history, tied for seventh all-time at 24 feet, 10 inches. He won three section golds and passed on the opportunity to deliver an unprecedented fourth this season when he took one jump and passed on remaining attempts because of a hamstring concern and placed second at 24-1¾. He then placed third at the CIF State Championships at 23-23/4, fouling on 4 of 6 attempts in a training process interrupted by the hamstring problem. He placed second in the state as a junior.
