Coach of the Year

Brian Weaver

  • School: Buchanan
  • Another Bearish season: Weaver is The Bee’s combined Coach of the Year for boys and girls track and field after the Bears swept the Central Section Masters team titles for the third time in four years on his clock. And the latest came in compelling circumstances. The boys, with 65 points, repelled Bakersfield (61), despite losing sprinter Isaiah Robinson (hamstring) and their 400 relay in the North Area qualifier — a setback that probably cost the team 25 points. There was no drama involved for Buchanan’s girls, however, as they crushed the section record with 140.5 points. Defending champion Clovis North was a distant second at 64.5 a year after setting a section standard with 112 points. The Bears’ girls also tied for fourth in the CIF State Championships team standings. Weaver, a Hoover High graduate who took over the Bears’ program in 1996, has won a section-record 12 team titles — six each among the boys and girls. And all of the boys’ crowns have come since 2009.
