Co-Outstanding Boys Track Event Performers
Eduardo Herrera, Madera South
- Grade: Junior
- Events: 1,600/3,200
- On the podium: He did more than deliver a double-distance gold — always a difficult thing to do — at the Central Section Masters, winning the 1600 and 3200. Those were the first Masters titles, boys or girls, in the history of the Stallions’ nine-year program. His third-place finish in the CIF State Championships’ 3200 was the school’s best all-time placing in any event, in that meet. And his personal bests of 4:10.13 in the 1,600 and 8:55.93 in the 3,200 are school records and Nos. 6 and 7 all-time in the section.
Connor Morello, Clovis
- Grade: Senior
- Events: 400/800/1,600/1,600 relay
- On the podium: His consecutive second-place finishes at the CIF State Championships are the best in the history of the boys program at a school built in 1899. The Cougars’ boys had won 23 state medals, but never better than bronze, before Morello was denied the 800 gold by one-hundredth of a second as a junior. That time of 1:51.05 remains fifth-best in section history. This year, he equaled the section’s best time in the 800 (1:51.39), had the No. 3 mark in the 1,600 (4:12.71) and was ninth in the 400 (49.85). Next stop — Washington.
