Outstanding Offensive Player
Position: Point guard
The résumé: Established Central Section freshman-class records with 694 points and 25.7 per-game average. Also set a school single-game scoring record with 42 points in an 83-74 season-ending overtime loss at section then five-year resigning champion Hanford in the section Division I quarterfinals. She unofficially finished 10th in state scoring overall for the season, made 59 3-pointers and 82.8% of her free throws.
The qualification: Bill Engel, McDonald's coach this season at Bullard, won a combined seven section championships as coach for Edison's boys (four) and girls (three). Those teams featured (boys) Andre Sims, Bruce Bowen, Charlie Ross and Sean Stell, and (girls) Tonisha Yancy and Java Johnson. "I've had some great players and Aarion is the most complete player I've ever had. And I know that's a bold statement. She scores, driving or 3-pointers, rebounds and plays on and off the ball. She has such a motor and doesn't take a play off. Her success this year as a freshman was off the charts."
And the Jackie White analogy: Looking back and ahead, Engel compared McDonald with former Memorial star Jackie White -- the consensus greatest female prep basketball player in section annals: "Jackie's the standard. If Aarion sticks around, she'll establish her own. My God, what a joy she is to watch."
