Bulldogs women beat San Jose State for fifth straight win

The Fresno State women’s basketball team beat San Jose State 81-71 Wednesday night at the Save Mart Center for the Bulldogs’ fifth straight win.

San Jose State lost its seventh straight, but the Spartans went down battling, taking a 61-59 lead into the fourth quarter.

Candice White scored 20 points to lead Fresno State. Maddi Utti posted her third double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Kristina Cavey and Aly Gamez each scored 14.

Taylor Turney led San Jose State with 22 points. Freshmen Megan Anderson and Danae Marquez, both out of Clovis West High, were quiet in their return to Fresno: Anderson started and made two free throws, grabbed two rebounds and had an assist and a steal in 24 minutes; Marquez had three rebounds, two assists and a steal in 10 minutes off the bench.

Fresno State (15-10, 10-4 Mountain West) is in a three-way tie for third place, one game out of first. The Bulldogs take momentum into a game Saturday at Colorado State, one of the teams Fresno State is tied with in the Mountain West.

Next week the Bulldogs play the conference co-leaders, home vs. UNLV on Wednesday and at Wyoming on Saturday. UNLV and Wyoming are both 10-3 in the Mountain West.
