Fresno State baseball: 'Dogs aim to reverse road trend during series at UCSB

The road has not been kind to the Fresno State baseball team this season.

And it’s about to get more difficult with Fresno State visiting No. 16 UC Santa Barbara for a four-game nonconference series, beginning at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Fresno State (16-13) is just 2-9 away from Beiden Field, including a 1-2 showing last week at New Mexico.

The Bulldogs, however, are 2-0 against nationally ranked opponents with one of those wins coming on the road against then-No.8 USC.

The Gauchos are coming off a 4-2 win over Long Beach State and are 13-5 at home.

Bulldogs third baseman Manny Argomaniz recorded seven of his 17 RBIs since moving to cleanup hitter from the No. 5 hole the past seven games, regularly benefiting from catcher Taylor Ward batting in the three-hole. Ward, a junior, is batting a team-best .359 average with six homers, 22 runs and 25 RBIs.

Fresno State continues to use a carousel pitching approach, using an average of 5.25 pitchers with its starters throwing an average of three innings during four games last week.

The Bulldogs have been lights-out when they’ve been able to establish the lead late, going 13-2 when ahead after seven innings and 15-0 when up after eight.

UC Santa Barbara’s Robby Nesovic is batting a team-high .372 with 24 RBIs, though he has not homered. In fact, the Gauchos have totaled just 10 home runs. In comparison, Fresno State has 21 home runs. UCSB, however, has allowed only six homers on the season.
