A couple of Power Five conference softball teams shut down Fresno State on Saturday to wrap up the Judi Garman Classic at Cal State Fullerton.
Northwestern beat the Bulldogs 5-3 before No. 8 Washington turned a one-hitter into a 5-1 victory over Fresno State (13-8).
The Bulldogs had chances against Northwestern in their first game of the day, rallying from a 2-0 deficit to lead 3-2 in the fourth on Savanahh McHellon’s RBI double.
But the Wildcats (6-11 after falling later in the day to No. 3 Florida) kept the pressure on Fresno State ace Kamalani Dung with two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth. Dung (9-4) pitched a seven-hitter with five strikeouts and five walks.
Third baseman Schuylar Broussard was 3 for 3 for the Bulldogs.
McHellon homered to center field in the second inning against Washington (14-2) struck out nine and the Huskies had 12 hits against losing pitcher Samantha Mejia (3-1).
