Three golfers from the Fresno area have reached the Round of 16 at the California Amateur Championship at Valencia Country Club.
Peter Kuest, Greg Gildea and T.J. Masters each picked up victories Wednesday in the opening round of match play at the 105th edition of the tournament.
Kuest, seeded eighth after two rounds of stroke play Monday and Tuesday, defeated Brandon Lee of Alpharetta 3 and 1. Kuest, a Clovis West High grad who’ll next attend BYU in the fall, next faces No. 24 Ryan Slater of Gilroy on Thursday.
Gildea, who joined the Fresno State golf team in January as a sophomore transfer from the University of Washington, beat fellow Bulldog and Clovis High alum Trevor Clayton – the Mountain West individual champion this past spring – 5 and 3. Gildea, seeded 13th, next plays No. 4 Shintaro Ban of San Jose.
No. 11 T.J. Masters, a former Clovis North and Reedley College standout, edged No. 22 Hale Furey of Newport Beach 2 and 1. He’ll next play No. 6 Tim Hogarth of Northridge.
Quarterfinal and semifinal matches are scheduled for Friday, with the final Saturday.
In stroke play, Kuest shot 1-over 67-76, Gildea (69-75) and Masters (72-72) were at 2 over, and Clayton came in at 3-over 73-72.
Failing to advance to match play were Clovis North’s Blake Hathcoat (6 over), Bryce Loosigian (9 over) and Peter Faragia (11 over), and Fresno State’s Justin Avery (8 over).
