In a clash of nationally ranked programs, Buchanan High starting pitcher Grant Gambrell allowed one hit in a complete game to beat Clovis 2-1 on Tuesday in Tri-River Athletic Conference action.
Gambrell, a 6-foor-4 senior, also provided an RBI when the Bears scored both of their runs in the first inning.
Cougars left-handed starting pitcher Zac Whittaker struck out 13 in a complete game. Teammate Mason Grotto finished 1 for 3 with a double and drove in Clovis’ lone run, which crossed in the fourth.
Buchanan (17-0, 3-0) entered the week ranked No. 3 in the nation by both USA Today and Maxpreps.com. The two national outlets also had Clovis (17-2, 2-2) at No. 6 and No. 11, respectively, in the country.
Tuesday marked the first meeting between the two heavyweight programs since Buchanan defeated Clovis 15-1 in last year’s Central Section Division I championship.
The teams meet again May 3 and May 6.
