Troy Aikman Expresses Strong Opinion on Eagles QB Jalen Hurts

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is entering the final year of guaranteed money from the five-year, $255 million extension he signed in April 2023.

“He knows this is the last year of his guaranteed money," an unnamed Eagles source told The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jeff McLane earlier this spring. "He knows the cat's out on some of his baggage. You got to be able to produce. You can't be near the bottom of the league in passing two years in a row with the amount of talent that we have. It's not acceptable. And it's everybody saying it - from [owner] Jeffrey [Lurie] on down.”

While there may be questions about Hurts’ future within the Eagles’ building, Troy Aikman is willing to guarantee his success.

Aikman appeared on ESPN’s “Get Up” on Tuesday morning and unpacked how difficult it has been for Hurts to navigate having seven different playcallers in seven NFL seasons. The Eagles hired Sean Mannion as their new offensive coordinator in January.

“I think that there will be more asked of Jalen Hurts to work the middle of the field, to maybe line up under center a little bit more in the play-action game, and that’s an offense that I’m a big believer in,” the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and Pro Football Hall of Famer said, adding, “I believe Jalen can do anything that he’s asked to do.”

Hurts is only one season removed from winning Super Bowl LIX and Super Bowl MVP, but last season was cause for concern. Under since-fired offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo, the Eagles’ offense went 3-and-out more often than any team in the league, and Hurts rarely, if ever, looked in command.

The Eagles still went 11-6 and won the NFC East, but their offensive demons ultimately led to their demise in the NFC Wild Card, as the grossly undermanned San Francisco 49ers upset them, 23-19.
