The third time was finally the charm for the Clovis High boys volleyball team on Friday night as the Cougars won the Central Section Division I championship.
Third-seeded Clovis beat No. 4 Clovis East 25-23, 25-19, 20-25, 25-16 to capture the elusive championship.
Clovis lost to Buchanan in the final each of the past two seasons.
“At the beginning of the year, our slogan was ‘unfinished business,’” Clovis junior outside hitter Samuel Johnson said. “We were up two sets to one last year and (Buchanan) came all the way back from an eight-point deficit and beat us.”
The Cougars were determined to not allow another repeat of the past two seasons and won the first two sets.
Clovis East refused to go down without a fight though, and won the third set 25-20.
Johnson said that his team’s faltering in the third set was nothing new.
“All year we have had trouble in the second and third sets, just relaxing too much and in that fourth set, we got in a group and David (Hawkins) and I started talking and we said, ‘We’re not dropping this again. It happened a couple years ago, we’re not doing it again,’” Johnson said.
Clovis now awaits its next opponent in the state regionals. Seedings for the championship brackets will be announced Sunday evening.
