Good pitching is often the key to victory in big softball games, and that is exactly what Buchanan High got Tuesday from senior Michelle Kroell in the Bears’ 4-1 championship game victory over Clovis in the Clovis Easter Classic.

Kroell kept the Cougars hitless until the fourth inning and Buchanan gave her an early lead.

She said the key to her five-hitter was simple: confidence.

“I really just put confidence in my team and I give them 100 percent and they give me 100 percent,” Kroell said.

Buchanan junior Emily Cazares drove in Claire Buckley for a 2-1 lead in the third inning and the Bears never looked back.

Taylor Johnson singled and came around to score the Cougars’ lone run in the fourth.

Buchanan, No. 1 in The Bee’s Central Section Top 10, is gunning for a return to the top of the section after Clovis won the Division 1 championship each of the past two years.

“Absolutely. We intend to win,” Kroell said, exuding more of that confidence.

The Bears resume their regular-season schedule April 24 in a Tri-River Athletic Conference game at Clovis West.
