Fuego pick up PDL win
Gaston “Tato” Cignetti appears to have found the fountain of youth.
The 35-year-old midfielder and team captain scored twice as the Fresno Fuego stunned defending Premier Development League Southwest Division champ Ventura County 4-0 to spoilt the Fusion’s home opener Saturday night.
Fresno (1-0-1) went ahead in the 33rd minute on Cignetti’s 30-yard strike off a throw-in from Abraham Campos. The Fuego added Renato Bustamante’s goal in the 49th and Cignetti’s second of the game in the 69th. Team trialist Sven Ricke of Germany scored in the 85th as the Fusion fell to 1-1-0.
Cignetti had a goal and two assists in a 3-3 opening draw with Golden State.
Sunbirds get shot to defend NCCAA crown
Fresno Pacific earned a trip to Ohio to defend its National Christian College Athetlic Association baseball championship, as Tanner Irwin struck out four in 22/3 innings to help the Sunbirds hold off Bethesda 4-3 for a sweep of a West Regional series at FPU Diamond.
Michael Hostetler was 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Sunbirds (34-18), who had leads of 3-0 and 4-1. Bethesda (28-26) was making its first postseason appearance in program history.
The Sunbirds await their seeding for the NCCAA World Series, set for May 20-23 in Mason, Ohio.
