Fresno Pacific: Rob Podeyn named women’s soccer coach; baseball wins twice at Point Loma

Fresno Pacific hires women’s soccer coach

Rob Podeyn was named the Fresno Pacific women’s soccer coach after previously leading Southwest Baptist (Mo.) to a Top 25 national ranking and consecutive NCAA Division II tournament appearances the past two seasons.

Podeyn went 16-5-1 and coached Southwest Baptist to its first conference tournament championship in the last of his six seasons. Podeyn’s teams have averaged 2.5 goals per game over his 13-year head-coaching career.

Podeyn replaces Erik Farfan, who resigned in January after going 6-8-2 in his ninth season as coach.

“This is a special group of young women who want to be successful and are committed to building a championship program in the PacWest Conference,” said Podeyn, who has also coached at Northwood (Tx.), Williams Woods (Mo.) and Central Florida. “I am excited and ready to help them reach these goals and build FPU into an elite NCAA Division II program.”

Sunbirds baseball sweeps Point Loma

The Fresno Pacific baseball team ended Point Loma’s school-record 17-game winning streak and picked up its first win at Carroll B. Land Stadium with 7-2 and 3-0 victories in a PacWest Conference doublheader.

In the opener, Wilson Ashford started and pitched six innings, scattering nine hits and allowed two runs to improve to 7-2. Baron Bower backed Ashford, driving in three runs. including a three-run home run to right center in the seventh inning.

In game 2, Drew Merlo pitched a four-hitter, while Bower helped with a run-scoring double in the third inning.

The Sunbirds, who have won six in a row, improve to 26-14 and 14-12 in conference play while the Sea Lions fall to 30-9 and 16-6.
