Boxing: Fowler celebrates newly minted pro fighter (video)

Fowler High on Friday saluted Alex Rojas, who reportedly will be the first pro boxer from the city when he debuts on the “Fight for Water 4” card on May 9 at Selland Arena.

Students, teachers, Principal Hank Gutierrez and Mayor David Cardenas greeted Rojas, 24, at a noon rally in the center quad, with the event including a 2-minute sparring session with trainer Tony Valencia. Rojas, who was on the school’s football team from 2005-09, will fight an opponent to be named in a junior welterweight fight.

Avenal resident Jose Ramirez (13-0, 10 KOs) headlines the card against Robert Frankel (33-15, 6 KOs) in a scheduled eight-round, junior welterweight bout.
