Sneak Preview: Mexican soccer clubs play in Fresno on Friday

A look at this week’s Liga MX exhibition match pitting Leon against Cruz Azul

• Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday at Chukchansi Park

• The skinny: Tickets selling fast, with more than 10,000 fans expected to take over the downtown Fresno stadium. Capacity set at 16,000 for the exhibition between two Mexican club teams and about 4,000 tickets (half of those standing-room only) remained as of 5 p.m. Wednesday, according to promoter Fred Godinez of Latin Entertainment. Cruz Azul, sixth with 19 points in the Liga MX Clausura, brings roster that includes former Mexico World Cup midfielder and captain Gerardo Torrado. Argentine midfielder Christian “Chaco“ Gimenez also is expected to suit up. He leads team with three goals in 11 games. Leon, which played Atlas in a friendly Wednesday in Stockton, is led by midfielder Carlos “Gullit“ Pena, Luis “El Chapo” Montes and Jonny Magallon. Leon is 16th in 19-team Liga MX. This exhibition falls during official FIFA international match period, leaving both clubs without handful of players. Not appearing in Fresno are Leon goalkeeper William Yarbrough, recently selected to the U.S. national team, and midfielder Juan Jose Vasquez, called to Team Mexico. Cruz Azul will be without Jesus Corona, Julio Cesar Dominguez and Francisco “El Maza” Rodriguez, also picked to represent Mexico. Gates open at 4 p.m. with Fresno Fuego of the Premier Development League playing a pre-main event friendly.
