Drayton Riekenberg pitched seven innings and Daniel Gardner had a two-run single in the sixth inning as NorCal No. 2-ranked Fresno City College won its sixth straight game, 4-3 against No. 4 Merced at John Euless Ballpark.
Riekenberg (2-1) allowed one earned run on five hits with seven strikeouts for the Rams (18-3, 13-1 Central Valley Conference).
• Wyatt Champlin helped break open the CVC baseball game with a two-run single in College of the Sequoias' five-run fifth inning, and the Giants (12-9, 7-4) went on to an 8-0 win over Reedley (6-14, 3-8).
• Elizabeth Flores helped her cause in the first game with a double and two RBIs, then pitched a two-hitter as Reedley (16-13, 8-1) swept Merced (7-21, 1-7) in a CVC softball doubleheader 9-2 and 1-0.
Monsters drop playoff series opener
Luc Whyte's goal in overtime lifted the Valencia Fliers over the Fresno Monsters 3-2 on Thursday to open the third round of the Western States Hockey League playoffs.
The best-of-3 series continues at 5:30 p.m. Friday from Gateway Ice Center.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first period, the Monsters forced overtime with third-period goals from Conner Hyden and Evan Ingram.
