Fresno City College’s Connor Brogdon pitched five hitless innings, but the NorCal sixth-ranked Rams fell to No. 9 Sacramento City 3-1 in a baseball season opener.
Brogdon struck out nine but had thrown 85 pitches. The Panthers took the lead in the seventh on Drake Atlee’s home run to left off Drayton Riekenberg, who fanned four in 2⅓ innings for Fresno City.
The two-game series wraps up Saturday in Sacramento. The Rams’ home opener is Feb. 13 against Chabot.
• Jonathon Molina and Zachary Fleeman combined for a five-hitter as Sequoias blanked Allan Hancock 5-0 at the Bakersfield Tournament. The Giants (1-1) broke a 0-0 tie with five hits in a five-run seventh. Corey Davis Jr. and Blake Edmonson had consecutive RBI singles.
• West Hills lost to Siskiyous 15-7 on Friday but took the series after sweeping a Thursday doubleheader, including an 11-10 win in the nightcap in which Jordan Stallworth drew a bases-loaded walk and Alex Westlund drove in another with a forceout on which the winning run come home on an error in a three-run 10th.
West Hills dropped its opening series, falling 6-4 to Siskiyous. The Falcons (1-2) split a Thursday doubleheader.
Fuego to host USL PRO’s Galaxy II
The Fresno Fuego will host USL PRO’s LA Galaxy II for the second time in an exhibition set for 7 p.m. Feb. 21 at Chukchansi Park.
The Galaxy II debuted as a franchise last year in Fresno, beating the Fuego 2-1.
