This July 11 editorial cartoon by Jack Ohman depicts yellow journalism at its worst. The last part of the cartoon states, “To the NRA and their handmaidens in Congress…No Lives Matter.”
While the killings depicted are atrocious, they were not perpetrated or sanctioned by the NRA – they were done by deranged individuals as acts of hatred.
Since its inception in the late 1980s, the NRA has been the premier firearms education organization in the world, public or private. It began hunter-safety classes in 1949 and law enforcement training in 1956.
I am not – nor have I ever been – a member of the NRA. However, in the 1970s, I taught a hunter-safety class sanctioned by the California Fish and Game Department. I used material first produced by the NRA.
The NRA does not advocate the killing of individuals. Lives, to them, do matter. Their gun safety classes prove that.
The Fresno Bee and Jack Ohman owe the NRA a huge apology.
