I am one of the World War II Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service).
Recently I went with other veterans on the Central Valley Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., to see the memorials that honor veterans of all the wars. The trip was free for veterans. Each of us was accompanied by a caring guardian who stayed by our side at all times. Everyone returned home safely, and we’re grateful to those who cared for us and to this community for making the trip financially a reality for every veteran. It was an awesome experience.
While still on the plane coming home, we heard “mail call, mail call” called out by those who had planned every amazing detail of this remarkable trip. I received many “Thank you for your service” letters written by my five children, five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, drawings from Teague Elementary School children, and some others I do not know.
I have read them many times. To everyone who wrote to thank me and included their thoughts about war and patriotism, I sincerely thank you, too.
