I would like to congratulate Sheriff Margaret Mims on her willingness to allow ICE personnel into the jail to target illegal immigrants with significant criminal histories for deportation. This program should increase the safety of all citizens in Fresno County, including both legal and illegal immigrants.
Apparently, some immigrant support groups have a problem with this, which is puzzling to me. The criminals targeted by ICE for deportation are just as likely to victimize other immigrants as anybody else. It seems that they would support Sheriff Mims in her endeavor, as it would protect the immigrant community as a whole.
Sadly, when someone voices this type of concern, they are inevitably labeled a “racist.” Attempting to look at the situation objectively, the question that comes to my mind is who really is being “racist?”
It seems these immigrant support groups don’t want any people of their ethnic group deported even if they are a danger to others. They seem to want their group to be exempt from deportation laws, which smacks of preferential treatment based on race. I doubt very seriously that they’d be demonstrating in the streets if it were illegal Canadian immigrants in the jail awaiting deportation.
