Ruben Navarrette Jr. has exploded again and now claims to be a journalist of color.
In an earlier article, he implied that he was looked upon as a “coconut,” white inside and brown outside. His tirade against Mark Halperin for asking Ted Cruz to prove his Cuban-ness was inappropriate. We Latinos suffer from many opportunists like he and Mr. Cruz, who alternate their perspectives according to who the audience is, only later to see them dancing, arm in arm, with tea party and conservative Republicans.
Perhaps Mr. Halperin has noticed this phenomena, and was curious about Mr. Cruz’ sentiments on heritage and governance. As for Mr. Navarrette Jr., he is at odds with himself. He hates being a person of color, especially Mexican. In his attacks on the Mexican and Latino activists over the years,he speaks of them much like Victor Davis Hanson does in the book “Mexifornia.” It is a voice loaded with scorn and elitism, a voice echoing Manifest Destiny values.
